Secrets from Alaska’s Frozen Past - Boneyard Alaska

Beneath the ever-frozen ground of Alaska lie the bones of Ice Age creatures that roamed this region tens of thousands of years ago: bison, woolly mammoths, and prehistoric bears. Stored in a permafrost deep-freeze for all this time, these remains are in pristine condition and represent an unprecedented window into the life of the Pleistocene Epoch.

The bones are now being unearthed by an Alaskan gold miner named John Reeves, a private landowner with no scientific training whatsoever. But John has a passion for bones and for collecting, and has assembled over a hundred thousand specimens from his mine site, “The Boneyard”. For the first time, John invites a small team of expert paleontologists to visit his site and his collection. As the scientists wade into the mud and peruse the boxes of the collection, discoveries are made before our very eyes, potentially rewriting the history of North America.

The permafrost muck is turning green.

Global warming with higher temperature in the summer and during the The permafrost hold a large mass of Carbon, decomposing material and water in the form of ice. With the ice melting due to warmer summers and less cold in the winter, the permafrost has been melting at an accelerated rate and the release of gasses from decomposing material in the muck into our atmosphere at this high rate makes for an alarming fact, its happening but we do not like to believe it is so.

This is what the permafrost looks like with just frozen gravel and small rocks intermixed, frozen rock solid. On the surface its melting, but deeper in the frozen gravel is rock hard.

At the Boneyard dig site, Kinsey have discovered a perfectly preserved holly mammoth leg bone in the permafrost. Discovery of animal bones from the Last Ice Age are made this day in July. It is believed the bone collection is the largest private bone collection from the plasticine epoch in the world.

This is a very unique fused neural spine bone of a Stepper Bison that went extinct during the last part of the Last Ice Age some 11700 years ago. Discovering an animal bone fragment like this whit fused bones like this is very unique, the animal must have been the surviving Steppe Bison from a fierce fight or two having endured such an injury which it healed from.
